This is an old project we pulled out of our files - we don’t have plans to produce it, but always wanted to see it full-size, in real 3D. We’ve haven't come up with a name for it either, but we keep tossing ideas around. Someone suggested "The Singer" - as in the sewing machine. We see that now that they mention it.
The ultimate expression of it would be in polished aluminum (like our Empire Lamp) with a large brass cylinder acting as a center point/pivot for the top, base and sides. The end faces would have colored epoxy pockets.
Our plan right now is to do a simple high-quality prototype out of ABS plastic so we can take a few photographs and mess around with some concepts for the light shroud- more on that in another post.
Just a few images that stimulated this design: the metal eagles that sit atop the Chrysler Building in NYC, a bald eagle, whose wing profile is echoed by the vertical “legs” in the design and, finally, a tower crane, which is the inspiration for the cantilever profile of the structure.
The underside of the bulb area will contain a “bulb shroud” of some kind that we will iterate on using various materials and colors. Our plan right now is to do a simple high-quality prototype of the lamp body out of beige ABS plastic so we can take a few editorial-type photographs and see how we feel about the design.
Construction of this prototype lamp is well underway and we should have a follow-up post with photographs of the completed lamp within a week or two. Stay tuned....
